Study Reveals Intriguing Link Between Enlarged Perivascular Spaces and Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

A recent cohort study analyzed 271 subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) survivors through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), exploring the correlation between enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) and spontaneous SAH. The study focused on basal ganglia EPVS (BG-EPVS) and revealed a higher severity in aneurysmal SAH (aSAH) compared to non-aneurysmal cases. Notably, BG-EPVS predominance was exclusive to aSAH survivors. A significant BG-EPVS association persisted in aSAH patients without pre-existing risk factors. The findings suggest BG-EPVS as a potential MRI-visible characteristic relevant to understanding aSAH pathogenesis and glymphatic function at the skull base.
