Study Reveals Nocebo Effect: Expectancy Plays a Key Role in Gastrointestinal Symptoms of Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity

A study explored the impact of expectancy and actual gluten intake on symptoms in individuals with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). In the study involving 83 participants, those who expected and consumed gluten showed significantly higher gastrointestinal symptom scores than those with different expectations. The findings suggest a significant role of expectancy in influencing symptoms, indicating a potential nocebo effect in NCGS.
