A groundbreaking Mendelian randomisation study has uncovered a potential causal link between body composition and testosterone levels. Analyzing genetic data from the UK Biobank, the study found that genetically predicted whole body fat mass was negatively associated with total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and sex hormone-binding globulin. Additionally, reducing fat mass was shown to have a more potent effect on increasing testosterone levels than fat-free mass. The findings shed light on the complex relationship between obesity and testosterone, emphasizing the potential benefits of reducing fat mass.
