A recent case-control study, drawing from the IBIS-II prevention trial, explored the impact of serum hormone concentrations on the efficacy of the breast cancer prevention drug, anastrozole, in postmenopausal women at high risk. The study revealed a significant association between elevated oestradiol–SHBG ratios and increased breast cancer risk in the placebo group, while anastrozole demonstrated a protective effect. This underscores the potential role of routine serum hormone measurement in aiding clinicians to identify individuals who would benefit most from aromatase inhibitors. The findings advocate for integrating hormone assessment into breast cancer risk management strategies.
