The study investigated the effectiveness of four Staphylococcal bacteriophages in various concentrations of common lavage solutions used in prosthetic joint infection (PJI) surgery. Testing six solutions at 100%, 1%, and 0.01% concentrations, including chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide, the study found a significant decrease in bacteriophage titers after exposure. Notably, even at 0.01%, only acetic acid affected titers. The findings underscore the need to cautiously remove lavage solutions before introducing therapeutic bacteriophages, particularly in the presence of acetic acid, in PJI treatment.
