A recent study explored the efficacy of a classic ketogenic diet versus additional antiseizure medication in infants (1–24 months) with drug-resistant epilepsy. Of the 136 participants, 78 were assigned to the ketogenic diet and 58 to medicine. The study was terminated early because no significant difference in seizure reduction was found between the two groups. Both approaches demonstrated similar tolerability, with serious adverse events reported in 51% and 45% of the ketogenic diet and medication groups, respectively. The study suggests a ketogenic diet could be a viable option for infants with persistent seizures after trying two antiseizure medications.
