A study examined the association between angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and epilepsy incidence among US adults with hypertension. Two million two hundred sixty-one thousand nine hundred sixty-four eligible patients were analyzed, with 309,978 receiving ARBs. Compared to other antihypertensive medications (ACE inhibitors, β-blockers, calcium channel blockers), ARB use was associated with a lower incidence of epilepsy (adjusted hazard ratios ranging from 0.70 to 0.75). Subgroup analyses indicated this association was particularly notable in patients without prior stroke or cardiovascular disease. The study suggests that ARBs, particularly losartan, may have potential antiepileptogenic properties warranting further investigation through randomized clinical trials.
