Study Suggests Protective Effect of Maternal Antibiotics on Preterm Neonates

Administering antibiotics to mothers near delivery may offer protection against infections or lead to adverse outcomes for both the mother and neonate. In a retrospective analysis of 200 preterm neonates, born between 26+0 and 36+6 weeks of gestation, who were exposed to antibiotics within a week before delivery, the study found a decrease in the odds of necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, or death. Although the study suggests a protective effect, it acknowledges limitations, emphasizing the need for prospective studies to evaluate long-term effects and microbiological impacts on neonates.
