Study Validates Safety and Efficacy of Cartilage-Perichondrium Technique for Large Tympanic Membrane Perforations

In a three-year study assessing the cartilage-perichondrium over-underlay technique for large tympanic membrane (TM) perforations, 62 patients were examined for graft outcomes and complications. The technique demonstrated a 91.8% overall graft success rate, with a 6.5% graft failure rate at 24 months. Neovascularization was observed in 88.7% of patients. Graft cholesteatomas occurred in 4.8% of cases at 7–24 months postoperatively, while iatrogenic middle ear cholesteatomas were not reported. The study suggests that the method is safe and effective for repairing large TM perforations with minimal complications.
