Suppressing Retinal Remodeling to Mitigate Vision Loss in Photoreceptor Degenerative Disorders

In retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, photoreceptors (rods and cones) degenerate, causing visual impairment. Beyond photoreceptors, retinal remodeling, a set of morphological and physiological changes, occurs. Some aspects compensate for vision loss, while others hinder natural or restored vision. This review explores remodeling mechanisms, focusing on retinoic acid's role in detrimental changes. Suppressing retinoic acid production or signaling could offer therapeutic solutions for vision loss.
