Sweetened Beverage Intake and Incident Chronic Kidney Disease in the UK Biobank Study

A new study delves into the connection between sugary drinks, artificial sweeteners, and natural juices with chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk. Analyzing data from 127,830 participants over a median of 10.5 years, findings show consuming over one serving daily of sugar-sweetened beverages increases CKD risk by 19%, while artificially sweetened beverages raise it by 10-26%. However, natural juices show no significant association with CKD risk. Substituting sugary drinks with water or natural juice reduces CKD risk, emphasizing the importance of reducing sugary drink intake for kidney health.
