Systemic antibiotic treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of oral doxycycline antibiotics and macrolides in treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). A systematic review and meta-analysis of six prospective studies, including 563 cases from three countries, were conducted. Both treatment methods improved MGD signs and symptoms, but macrolides were significantly superior in terms of total signs score, meibomian gland secretion score, tear break-up time, and fluorescein staining score and had significantly fewer adverse events. The study concludes that both macrolides and tetracyclines are effective treatments for MGD, but macrolides exhibit better efficacy and safety profiles compared to tetracyclines.
