Task-Dependent Effects of Signal Audibility for Processing Speech: Comparing Performance With NAL-NL2 and DSL v5 Hearing Aid Prescriptions at Threshold and at Suprathreshold Levels in 9- to 17-Year-Olds With Hearing Loss

This study examined the impact of different audibility levels on children and adolescents with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Hearing aids were programmed using two different fitting formulas, and separate programs with and without low-level adaptive gain were provided. The participants' speech reception threshold (SRT) and performance in various auditory tasks were measured. The study found that the fitting formula significantly affected SRT, while word recognition was influenced by presentation level, fitting formula, and low-level gain. Audibility positively impacted word recognition and nonword detection but did not significantly affect multiword recall and word learning. These results suggest that audibility aids initial perception but has a lesser role in memory and learning processes.
