Teenagers at risk of rare diseases due to drop in vaccine uptake during Covid pandemic

Health officials in the UK warn that teenagers may be at risk of rare diseases due to a drop in vaccinations during the Covid pandemic. The percentage of 13 and 14-year-olds receiving vaccines against tetanus, diphtheria and polio dropped by 7% in 2021-22 compared to the previous year, and uptake of the meningitis vaccine also fell. Parents are being urged to ensure their children are up to date with vaccinations before they leave school. The UK Health Security Agency advises those who have missed out to contact their school nurse, school immunisation team or GP surgery to arrange a catch-up.
