Testing regulatory T cells for liver transplantation tolerance

In a new study, Tang and colleagues investigated whether autologous donor alloantigen-reactive regulatory T (Treg) cells can promote liver transplantation tolerance to reduce the need for broad immunosuppressive treatments in transplant recipients. In phase I/II ARTEMIS trial, five individuals received these Treg cells 2–6 years after undergoing living donor liver transplantation. The infusions were well tolerated, but the efficacy of immunosuppression could not be assessed as the sample size of participants receiving inputs was too low. Further analysis indicated that the Treg cells exhibited dysfunction post-transplantation.
