The 5-HT_1F receptor as the target of ditans in migraine — from bench to bedside

Ditans, a group of selective serotonin 5-HT1F receptor agonists, has been approved for acute migraine treatment by the US FDA and the European Medicines Agency. Current treatments have limited efficacy and potential adverse effects, resulting in low treatment adherence. However, the introduction of ditans, along with agents targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide pathway, shows promise. Preclinical studies from the late 1990s and recent clinical research have contributed to the development and approval of ditans.
