The airway smooth muscle layer is structurally abnormal in low birth weight infants

This research letter discusses the association between intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), low birth weight (LBW), and the increased risk of obstructive disease. Using a maternal hypoxia mouse model of IUGR, the study suggests that the elevated risk of obstructive disease might be linked to airway wall abnormalities, specifically airway smooth muscle (ASM) thickening in fetuses. Previous findings in mice indicate that IUGR causes ASM changes, including thickening and increased stiffness, potentially impacting postnatal bronchoconstrictor response.
