The Application of Ultrasound to Quantify Hyoid Motion During Drug‐Induced Sleep Endoscopy

Ultrasonography used during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is a reliable and innovative technique that allows for the measurement of hyoid motion in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The study found that dynamic hyoid displacement increases during flow-limited breathing, but there is considerable variability in displacement amplitude among patients. The significance of hyoid dynamics in the pathophysiology of OSA is still unclear. The researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis on a cohort of patients who underwent DISE with positive airway pressure (PAP) titration and hyoid-focused ultrasound. The results showed that hyoid displacement during obstructive breathing was on average 5.81 mm, and it decreased significantly after PAP administration. The study highlights the need for further research to better understand the factors influencing hyoid mobility.
