The association between oral carbohydrate intake before orthopedic surgery for osteoporotic fractures

A retrospective cohort study in China involving 879 elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery for osteoporotic fractures (OPFs) explores the impact of preoperative oral carbohydrate (CHO) intake. After propensity score matching, patients with CHO intake exhibited reduced 60-day mortality, shorter hospital stays, and lower costs. No significant associations were found with postoperative nausea, vomiting, or blood transfusion risk. The study acknowledges limitations and suggests larger, more comprehensive research to validate findings and understand underlying mechanisms.
