The Autoimmune Rheumatic Disease Related Dry Eye and Its Association with Retinopathy

Chronic dry eye, a condition marked by tear film issues and ocular inflammation, affects 5-50% globally. Autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) involving multiple organs, including the eyes, contribute significantly to dry eye. Studies, primarily on Sjögren's syndrome, highlight the link between dry eye and ARDs. Dry eye symptoms often precede ARDs diagnosis, with ocular discomfort indicating disease severity. ARD-associated dry eye may also impact retinal health. This review outlines incidence, characteristics, causes, and eye-related aspects of ARD-related dry eye, emphasizing its potential role in identifying and monitoring ARD patients.
