The causal effect of metabolic syndrome and its components on benign prostatic hyperplasia: A univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization study

This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components, such as waist circumference (WC) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The researchers analyzed genetic data from genome-wide association studies involving 26,358 BPH cases and 110,070 controls. The results showed that genetically predicted WC and DBP were positively associated with BPH risk. However, no causal effect was found for MetS, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and fasting blood glucose on BPH. Further validation is needed for the causal effect of WC on BPH, but the study provides genetic evidence supporting the causal effect of DBP on BPH.
