
This study investigated the interaction between spatial hearing benefits in a multi-talker environment. Participants with normal hearing performed auditory-only and auditory-visual sentence recognition tasks with target speech and maskers presented from different locations. The study used a real-time processing algorithm called LocDeg to simulate sound-localization degradation. The results showed that spatial hearing benefits, including perceptual talker separation and localization cues, were diminished by the LocDeg algorithm. The study also found that visual cues improved performance when the target was accurately localized but did not provide additional assistance in separating co-located competing speech. These findings emphasize the significance of sound localization in everyday communication.
