The SWEET sub-study investigated the impact of weight loss on insulin sensitivity and intrahepatic lipid (IHL) content in individuals with overweight or obesity. Fifty adults followed a low-energy diet for 2 months. Weight loss led to improved insulin sensitivity and reduced IHL content, particularly hepatic saturated fatty acids. The decrease in IHL content was associated with an increase in hepatic insulin sensitivity. The study findings suggest that weight loss can positively affect insulin sensitivity and liver fat content in overweight or obese individuals.
