
A study investigated whether reducing sedentary behavior (SB) by 1h/day over 6 months would improve insulin sensitivity in sedentary adults with metabolic syndrome. The intervention group showed a decrease in SB and an increase in physical activity (PA), but there were no significant changes in insulin sensitivity in the whole body or specific muscles. However, reductions in SB correlated with increased insulin sensitivity in the hamstring muscles and the whole body, while increases in PA and daily steps were associated with improved insulin sensitivity. Overall, targeted behavioral interventions to reduce sedentariness may not effectively increase insulin sensitivity at the population level.
