The Future of Medicine is Inclusive: Why We Need Diversity in Clinical Trials

Marginalized racial and ethnic groups, women, and historically disenfranchised populations are significantly underrepresented in clinical trials. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently highlighted this issue and suggested reforms to the clinical research enterprise. The goals of increasing diversity in clinical trials include building trust, promoting fairness, and generating biomedical knowledge. Earning the trust and promoting fairness are the most important goals, and achieving one goal may result in progress toward another. Initiatives designed to increase diversity and representativeness in trials should prioritize these goals to earn interest and investment in sustainable efforts.
