This review examined the effects of weight change from childhood to adulthood on the risk of depression and anxiety in adulthood. The evidence consistently showed that persistent and increasing adiposity from childhood to adulthood was associated with an increased risk of depression, particularly in women. However, there were limitations in the evidence and inconsistent findings for anxiety and composite outcomes. Early intervention to prevent or resolve excess weight may help reduce the burden of depression and mental health support for adolescents with persistent and increasing adiposity. Further high-quality research is needed to address the methodological limitations identified in the studies.
