The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental burden and quality of life in medical students - results of an online survey

This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of medical students and the potential psychological consequences. The researchers retrospectively assessed perceived anxiety and measured changes in symptoms of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Quality of life was assessed using the WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire. The results showed that anxiety, burden, depression, and anxiety symptoms increased significantly after the pandemic outbreak. Factors such as previous psychiatric illness, being in the early years of studies, higher burden, and greater differences in symptoms of depression were associated with a decreased quality of life in medical students. The study suggests that medical faculties should provide specific support to prevent psychiatric issues among students, potentially leading to long-term medical leaves.
