The impact of radical prostatectomy on global climate: a prospective multicentre study comparing laparoscopic versus robotic surgery

A study compared the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions between Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) and Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP) to evaluate the environmental impact of minimally invasive surgery. The study assessed the life cycle of both procedures and estimated the energy consumption for surgical procedures and hospital stays. The study found that RALP generated substantially less CO2 emissions than LRP due to the use of more reusable surgical supplies, shorter operative time, and hospital stay. The total CO2 emissions were around 47 kg and 60 kg per procedure in the RALP and LRP groups, respectively.
