This study examines the role of iron in neurodevelopment and the impact of early-life iron deficiency on brain development and function throughout one's life. It highlights the importance of maternal preconceptional iron status, fetal iron accretion on offspring, and postnatal iron status and brain health. The connection between neonatal and postnatal iron deficiency is explored, emphasizing the significance of proper fetal iron loading. The review delves into fetal iron metabolism, its role in fetal brain development, and the short- and long-term neurobehavioral consequences of fetal iron underloading. Potential mechanisms for the long-term effects of fetal/neonatal iron deficiency are also discussed.
