The importance of sex and gender in basic and clinical research

The importance of considering factors related to sex and gender in kidney disease research is recognized, but often not implemented in basic and clinical studies. Kidney disease pathophysiology, presentation, response to therapy, and outcomes vary by sex and gender, and failure to consider these factors can lead to adverse outcomes. Current kidney disease care uses a 'one size fits all' approach, without considering sex-associated biological factors and gender-related factors. It is time for nephrology to catch up and incorporate these factors in research and care.
