TIMP-1 is a protein that regulates the activity of MMPs and maintains the extracellular matrix. It also has multiple cytokine-like functions, and its protein structure allows it to bind to many partners. CD63 is a receptor for TIMP-1, but there may be other interaction partners. The study used a yeast two-hybrid screening to identify interactors and found CD74 to be one of them. CD74 interacts with TIMP-1 in breast cancer cells, facilitating its internalization and intracellular signaling through the Akt axis. These findings shed light on the multifunctional nature of TIMP-1 and its potential mechanisms.
