The relationship between childhood adversity and sleep quality among rural older adults

A cross-sectional study investigated the impact of childhood adversity on sleep quality among 3,873 rural older adults aged 65 and over. The study found that about 48.15% of rural older adults had poor sleep quality. The total effect of childhood adversity on sleep quality was 0.208, with a direct effect of 0.066, accounting for 31.73% of the total impact. Indirect effects through anxiety and negative coping accounted for 68.27% of the total effect. Significant mediating effects were observed for anxiety (0.096) and negative coping (0.024). The combined mediating effect of both factors was 0.022. These findings suggest that addressing anxiety and negative coping may help reduce the negative effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality in rural older adults
