The study aimed to investigate the impact of safety-net status and case volume on outcomes in geriatric head and neck cancer patients. The researchers compared outcomes between safety-net and non-safety-net hospitals using various statistical tests and regression models. The results showed that safety-net hospitals had higher average mortality index, mortality rate, and direct cost index compared to non-safety-net hospitals. The multivariable analysis revealed that the interaction between safety-net status and medium case volume was associated with a higher mortality index. In conclusion, safety-net status was linked to higher mortality index and cost in geriatric head and neck cancer patients, particularly in hospitals with medium case volumes.
