The Role of Combined Inflammatory Biomarkers in the Diagnosis of High- and Low-Virulence FRI Among High-Risk Lower Extremity Fractures

The study aimed to assess infection-related biomarkers' diagnostic accuracy in high-risk lower limb fracture patients with fracture-related infection (FRI) caused by high-/low-virulence microorganisms. A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent surgery for lower extremity fractures. Of 576 patients, 8.85% had FRI, with 54.9% classified as high-virulence cases. CRP, ESR, NLR, and MLR levels were significantly higher in FRI cases, while high-virulence cases showed slightly higher CRP and NLR levels. In conclusion, preoperative serum biomarkers, especially CRP and NLR, were valuable in diagnosing FRI and differentiating virulence types.
