The Role of Postprandial Thermogenesis in the Development of Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Type II Diabetes

A recent analysis of existing research suggests that postprandial thermogenesis (PPT), the increase in resting metabolic rate after a meal, may be reduced in individuals with prediabetes and type II diabetes (T2D). This impairment, particularly in processing carbohydrates, may be linked to insulin sensitivity and energy expenditure. Findings indicate that both the energy costs of nutrient processing and sympathetic nervous system stimulation contribute to this reduced PPT. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the significance of these changes in PPT in the prediabetic stage before the onset of T2D.
