This study examined the relationship between exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults and adolescents using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2001-2016). The study found that higher levels of urinary PAH metabolites were associated with a higher prevalence of MetS and its components in both groups. In adults, the association was partially mediated by systemic inflammation. These results suggest that PAH exposure may be a risk factor for MetS and highlight the importance of reducing exposure to environmental pollutants to prevent metabolic disorders.
