The utility of self-expanding metal stents in benign biliary strictures- a retrospective case series

Benign biliary strictures significantly affect patients' quality of life. Various modalities, including self-expanding metal stents, are utilized for resolution. A retrospective case series evaluated the local success of self-expanding metal stents for resolving benign biliary strictures. Of the 31 patients meeting the criteria, most had anastomotic strictures post-liver transplant. Complications included cholangitis, pancreatitis, stent migration, and retrieval difficulty. Successful resolution occurred in 73.5% of patients with anastomotic strictures and 33.3% with pancreatitis-induced strictures, with optimal resolution at 180–365 days. The study concludes that self-expanding metal stents are a safe and effective treatment for these strictures, comparable to plastic stents with fewer interventions.
