This study investigated the relationship between gestational weight gain (GWG) and the risk of small- or large-for-gestational-age (SGA/LGA) births in different obesity classes. The study found that first-trimester GWG was not associated with SGA/LGA births, but second- and third-trimester weight maintenance was potentially associated with lower LGA risk for obesity class III. Some sensitivity analyses suggested no increased SGA risk with weight maintenance for obesity classes I and II. The study concludes that second- and third-trimester weight maintenance may lead to more optimal birth weight, but further research is needed to understand how this can be achieved through diet and exercise interventions.
