A study conducted in Japan evaluated the effectiveness and safety of faricimab in treating patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD). The study included 61 treatment-naïve patients with various types of macular neovascularization and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. The patients received three monthly intravitreal injections of faricimab as loading therapy. Results showed gradual improvement in visual acuity and a significant reduction in central foveal thickness and subfoveal choroidal thickness compared to baseline. After three months, 82% of the eyes achieved a dry macula, and 52% of eyes with PCV experienced complete regression of polypoidal lesions. Two eyes developed retinal pigment epithelium tears, but no other complications were observed. Overall, the study concluded that faricimab loading therapy improved visual acuity and retinal morphology in Japanese patients with wAMD without significant safety concerns.
