Tinnitus Common in Temporomandibular Disorder Patients

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), involving the temporomandibular joint, associated structures, and masticatory muscles, are characterized primarily by pain and restricted mouth opening. Tinnitus, a secondary symptom first linked to TMD by Costen in 1934, is thought to arise from shared structures and innervation between the TMJ and auditory system. This cross-sectional study at Cairo University’s Faculty of Dentistry included 196 patients with diagnosed TMD, excluding those with neurological, oncological, or ear infections. Findings show 63.8% were female, with 76.5% experiencing bilateral joint pain and 70.4% bilateral muscle pain. Notably, 91.8% of patients reported mild tinnitus, while 8.2% experienced moderate symptoms.
