Tobacco Smoking is Associated with Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema and Worse Outcomes in Interstitial Lung Disease

This retrospective cohort study investigated the impact of tobacco smoking on interstitial lung disease (ILD). The study analyzed data from 1163 ILD patients and found that smokers differed in their clinical characteristics, such as being older, male, and having idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, coronary artery disease, and CT honeycombing and emphysema. Smokers also experienced a shorter time to clinically meaningful lung function decline (LFD) and decreased survival compared to non-smokers. Additionally, for every additional ten-pack-years of smoking, smokers had a 12% greater odds of death. These findings suggest that smoking cessation efforts could improve outcomes in ILD patients.
