Tooth Loss Linked to Higher RA Activity but Not Treatment Response

In this study, tooth loss, a marker of periodontitis, was associated with higher disease activity and inflammation in early and established rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Among 1,124 early RA patients, those with more tooth loss had higher ESR, disease activity scores, and glucocorticoid use, though treatment response was unaffected. In 7,179 longstanding RA patients, tooth loss correlated with elevated disease activity and inflammation markers but not swollen joint counts. Tooth loss did not hinder treatment outcomes over time.
