Toric Monofocal Intraocular Lenses for the Correction of Astigmatism during Cataract Surgery

A recent review assessed visual and refractive outcomes of toric monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) during cataract surgery. The study examined 21 relevant studies and found that toric IOLs yielded superior postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity, reduced refractive astigmatism, and excellent rotational stability. Results demonstrated better outcomes compared to non-toric monofocal IOLs, emphasizing toric IOLs' efficacy in neutralizing pre-existing astigmatism. The study concludes that toric IOLs offer superior astigmatic correction over corneal relaxing incisions, particularly at higher magnitudes of astigmatism.
