Tracheostomy Disrupts Visual Attention and Facial Recall in Children

Tracheostomies significantly distract visual attention from the face to the neck. Eye-tracking data from 160 participants showed 3.7x more neck fixations and 8x longer viewing times for children with tracheostomies. Incorrect facial recall was also higher (p < 0.001). These findings suggest altered social interactions for affected children, beyond medical and communication issues, highlighting the need for awareness in social and educational settings.
