Transcatheter Repair of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation

Transcatheter Repair of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation

The COAPT trial examined the long-term effects of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of the mitral valve on patients with heart failure and secondary mitral regurgitation. The trial showed significant reductions in hospitalizations for heart failure and mortality over a 24-month period. However, the question remained whether these benefits would persist in the longer term. The trial included 614 patients and randomly assigned them to either undergo the repair procedure or receive medical therapy alone. The results demonstrated that the benefits observed in the primary results were maintained in the longer term, providing further evidence for the effectiveness of this intervention in improving outcomes for heart failure patients with secondary mitral regurgitation.
