This study employed single-cell RNA sequencing and retrograde tracing in mice to identify the intrinsic transcriptional features of dental primary afferent (DPA) neurons and proprioceptive mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN) neurons. They discovered cellular heterogeneity within these neuron populations, shedding light on their specialized mechanosensory functions in pain and proprioception and revealing distinct molecular profiles.
