Transition of management strategies and long-term outcomes in cancer-associated venous thromboembolism

This study compares management strategies and clinical outcomes in cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) patients before and after the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in real-world clinical practice. The study findings reveal a shift towards DOACs over warfarin. The DOAC era exhibits significantly lower rates of recurrent VTE (5-year cumulative incidence: 17.7% vs. 10.1%) and major bleeding (26.6% vs. 20.4%). However, there's an observed increase in gastrointestinal bleeding with DOACs, suggesting ongoing challenges in optimizing treatment strategies.
