Trauma Exposure and Pubertal Development’s Impact on Internalizing Symptoms.

Trauma Exposure and Pubertal Development’s Impact on Internalizing Symptoms.

The study examines how childhood trauma exposure shapes pubertal timing and tempo, influencing internalizing symptoms in female youth. The results of longitudinal data from the ABCD Study (N=4,225) reveal three distinct pubertal development groups. Trauma exposure correlated with earlier pubertal onset, increasing risk for internalizing symptoms, though not a faster pubertal tempo. These findings suggest a potential mechanism linking trauma to mental health outcomes.
