Treatable traits, combination inhaler therapy and the future of asthma management

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) with or without long-acting beta-agonists (LABA) are now the mainstay of treatment, with international guidelines recognizing the importance of combination inhaler therapy even for mild asthma. Future advancements include ultra-long-acting personalized medications and smart inhalers to improve adherence, inhaler technique, and polypharmacy issues. Asthma is now understood as a complex cluster of disorders, shifting treatment from a one-size-fits-all approach to precision medicine based on treatable traits. This approach encourages targeted medication use and management of underlying behavioral and biological risk factors. The efficacy of treatable traits requires further research and validation in different clinical settings and populations. Overall, combination inhaler therapy and treatable traits represent complementary treatment approaches, and this review highlights their current status and future prospects in asthma management.
