Trends in Diabetic Retinopathy and Eye Exams from 2017 to 2021

The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) continues to rise despite efforts to increase dilated fundus exams. A cross-sectional analysis from the BRFSS revealed a peak in DR rates in 2018, followed by a decline in 2019 and 2020, with no significant differences by metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Although eye exams have increased in non-MSA populations, disparities in diabetic eye care access remain, highlighting the need for further research into sociodemographic factors.
